IS BEING A FITNESS & BIKINI MODEL A BEHAVIOUR OR IDENTITY FOR YOU?
Working with many fitness and bikini model competitors I get to see their magnificent transformation with both their physique and confidence but on the other side I also see how post comp this physique and confidence can be so easily destroyed through loss of control of their diet and training once the competition is over… I see so much of myself in them when I first competed so I wanted to write this post to ensure who ever reads it – your not alone.
If you want to keep the body you need to keep the life style – how many times have you heard that before? Here is what really helped me to understand what that statement really ment.
Understand that there is a difference between identify and behaviour – stop and think about what the difference is for a second, now here are the definitions:
BEHAVIOUR: The way in which ones conducts themselves / the way in which a person acts in response to a particular situation
IDENTITY: The fact of being who or what a person or thing is
You can change your behaviours to be a fitness model but this will just be to “act in response to a particular situation (the competition) if you want to continue to (nothing to do with competing again) be a model of fitness is your everyday life then everyday you need to train and eat like one. You need to decide if this is going to be a lifestyle and identity for you because then this is your “normal”.
When you begin to stretch your identity not only your behaviours you begin to excel even further in every aspect of your life not just your comp prep.
One day a client called me a “confidence coach” at first I was unsure what to think but really this is the most important part of anything in comp prep and in life – having the confidence in yourself to achieve your goals. When I get my clients to see they ARE a fitness model they hold onto that and excel in not only posing but within training and every decision they make to lead them to that stage. My ultimate goal is for them to keep this confidence with their decision post competition because these are the most important decisions as they are about life and not just aiming for a plastic trophy – for me this is more important than any pose I could ever teach.
So if you have found yourself loosing control post comp, binge eating uncontrollably, gaining back the weight, feeling more out of control of your body than ever before then judging from these definitions you most likely have only changed your behaviours to the situation of competing. Although I believe that creating the identity of being a successful fitness and bikini model on and off stage sometimes comes with making these mistakes.
After many behavioural mistakes and conflicts between identity and behaviour I know now that being a model of fitness is my identity but most importantly I’ve come to realise that I don’t have to prove that to myself or anyone else by getting up on that stage.
My advice from my experience:
✅ Acknowledge and give yourself credit for what you have achieved to change within your behaviour and identity
✅ Learn from but don’t beat yourself up for any mistakes you made post comp because if you learn from mistakes it gives meaning to them
✅ From my experience it takes time and mistakes to make permanent changes to your behaviours to create the better you and identity you want to ultimately become
✅ Don’t let the competition/situation consume you that you forget about the eternal things in life like relationships with your partner, family & faith. Rather focus on who you want to be in every aspect of your life.
✅ Always remember it’s just a hobbie don’t make it your life because then you miss out on life
✅ You can still be a model of fitness without getting on that stage
